It can REALLY matter when a company is faced with adversity or controversy, either internally or externally. Join us to learn how community relations activities can help manage your corporate reputation. We will also discuss how to adapt gracefully to budget cutbacks resulting from the economic downturn. Our guest speaker and facilitator will be Matthew Nelson, Managing Director of Corporate Services with the Council on Foundations. Matthew was previously manager of community relations for Ameriprise Financial. He will be joined by a panel of corporate members of COF.

What implications does this research have for your work as funders? Mr. Fellmeth will provide insights from a state perspective. The Committee Encouraging Corporate Philanthropy (CECP) mission is to lead the business community in raising the level and quality of corporate community investment. They are a consortium of CEOs and Chairpersons who understand that community investment is a necessary component of any sustainable business plan. In partnership with over 150 leading companies, they have collected and analyzed detailed data on nearly $50 billion in corporate social investment. As a starting point for our interactive discussion on emerging trends, Program Manager Margaret Coady will present an in-depth look at how corporate giving is changing, as well as address specific issues such as matching gifts, volunteerism, international giving, and staffing.

We expect that grantees will put money to good use, evidence prudent management, produce positive outcomes and so on – all strings or conditions that come as part of the granting process. But other factors that impact philanthropy have nothing to do with grantees: these are the “strings” that shape us as grantmakers. Our personality, experiences, and perspectives both define who we are and influence how we give. In an invigorating dinner workshop, we will explore how what we bring to philanthropy impacts how effectively we give, and how we can become even more engaged philanthropists, whether as staff or trustees.
