SD Grantmakers Update

  March 2008

"We have to find a way to make the aspects of capitalism that serve wealthier people serve poorer people as well...This is how I see the world, and it should make one thing clear: I am an optimist. But I am an impatient optimist. The world is getting better, but it's not getting better fast enough, and it's not getting better for everyone."--Bill Gates

Diversity Update

Recently, SDG hosted a briefing on diversity in philanthropy featuring three distinguished philanthropic thought leaders: Steve Gunderson, President & CEO, Council on Foundations, Robert K. Ross, M.D., President & CEO, The California Endowment, and James E. Canales, President & CEO, The James Irvine Foundation. As you are probably aware, a bill regarding diversity in philanthropy was passed by the California State Assembly and is awaiting consideration in the Senate. AB624 would require private, corporate, and public foundations with assets over $250 million to track and disclose diversity-related data of their boards, staff, nonprofit grantees, business contracts and clients served through grants. While currently the bill will affect only the largest foundations, the trend will likely trickle downward.

Our diversity site (you will need to log in with SDG username "SDGmember" and password "2001") contains all the media reports and other resources related to this issue--check out especially Dr. Ross' insightful op-ed. Additionally, diversity is a hot topic all over our sector:  COF has launched a major Diversity & Inclusiveness initiative, several national funders have formed a Diversity in Philanthropy Project, and legislative interest in California has led to Foundation Center research that will benchmark diversity in the staff and leadership of foundations, their grantees and communities served. You can also click here to access the handouts from the session (again, log-in required).

Donor-Advised Funds Removed from IRS “Dirty Dozen” List of Tax Scams

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) released its 2008 list of tax scams, and donor-advised funds (DAFs) were dropped from the list. However, the list still includes "attempts by donors to maintain control over donated assets" as an abuse area. The Council on Foundations has had a long-standing continuous effort with the IRS to remove donor-advised funds from the “Dirty Dozen” list, and issued a press release applauding IRS for the removal of DAFs. For a complete list of the 2008 “Dirty Dozen” Tax Scams, visit the IRS’s website. Click here for a related article.

COF Philanthropy Summit

Philanthropy’s Vision: A Leadership Summit
May 4-7, 2008
Washington, DC Region (MD)

We are hoping to have a big contingent from San Diego. Let us know if you are planning to go so we can organize a SDG get-together! The national Council on Foundations invites grantmakers to this historic opportunity to discuss philanthropy’s future with other leaders from around the globe and to take part in programs designed to enhance collaboration and impact. SDG members can register at COF member rate! In order to receive the member rate, please indicate that you are a member of SDG when you register. Some featured programming includes:

Generational Leadership
This track of programs will explore the generational changes that are fueling a transfer of leadership and wealth marked by both opportunity and challenge. The Greatest Generation is eager to share lessons-learned; Baby Boomers want to make contributions that will build a lasting legacy; Generation X is hungry for opportunities to lead and reform the field; and Millennials are bringing new energy and approaches to philanthropy. Funders that do not address generational change may risk culture clashes, human resource and funding shortages, and unhealthy grantee transitions. Those that seize this moment can enhance their relevance for the future and expand the talent available to steward their missions.

Establishing a New Foundation Seminar
Sat., May 3 from 12:30-5:30 pm (pre-summit seminar with separate fee)

Are you in the planning stage or just now establishing a new foundation? Come to this seminar to gain legal and practical information to help you do it right.

Corporate Giving News

Corporate giving continues to rise
Charitable contributions by major corporations and their foundations increased to $10.2 billion in 2006, with pharmaceutical companies the top givers and health services the top beneficiary, a new study says. Contributions at home and abroad from 189 major corporations and corporate foundations were up from $9.8 billion in 2005, says the Conference Board's annual survey of corporate giving.

Corporations seek profit by doing good
Corporate social responsibility is no longer driven only by philanthropy and regulations, but by profit, a new study says. More than two in three of the 250 global business executives surveyed in a recent study by the IBM Institute for Business Value say they have adopted socially responsible practices in the hopes of generating revenue. Another 54 percent say they believe such initiatives contribute to their competitive advantage. The study, "Attaining Sustainable Growth Through Corporate Social Responsibility," attributes these trends to better informed customers.

McKinsey Report: The State of Corporate Philanthropy
Corporate philanthropy can help companies meet consumers’ rising expectations of business’s role in society,
say respondents to a McKinsey global survey. However, only about a fifth of all respondents say that philanthropic programs at their companies are meeting social goals and stakeholder expectations. At these companies, philanthropy programs are more likely to address social and political issues relevant to the
business, to be collaborative, and to meet any business goals companies have for them. Another small group of respondents say they intend their philanthropic programs to go beyond enhancing company reputation by addressing concrete business goals, such as learning about potential new markets. Ready to Lead? Next Generation Leaders Speak Out
A national study produced in partnership by CompassPoint Nonprofit Services, The Annie E. Casey Foundation, the Meyer Foundation and Idealist.org. A skilled, committed, and diverse pool of next generation leaders would like to be nonprofit executive directors in the future, according to a new national survey of nearly 6,000 next generation leaders. However, the survey also finds that there are significant barriers: work-life balance, insufficient life-long earning potential, lack of mentorship and overwhelming fundraising responsibilities which may prevent many younger nonprofit staff from becoming executives. This session will provide information and analysis of how the current economic situation and the state budget affect the nonprofit sector and philanthropy. Note that a recent Associated Press article reported that state budget woes are causing major cuts in health insurance for the needy, as well as other safety-net programs for the elderly, disabled, and unemployed.
