Bring your friends, family and colleagues to a special cultural event -- the preview performance of Permanent Collection , and a post-show facilitated discussion on the donor intent issues artfully raised in the play. The discussion will be led by Janine Mason, executive director of the Fieldstone Foundation and SDG board member, and Seema Sueko, Mo`olelo Artistic Director.
Permanent Collection, by playwright Thomas Gibbons, is based upon actual events surrounding The Barnes Foundation controversy in Philadelphia stemming from the decision of its Board to move the institutions’ art collection, against the wishes of the deceased founder.
In the play, when a conflict over the intended legacy is uncovered by a curious journalist, a complex and bitter clash erupts over race, representation, legacy, art and the role of the media, asking the question: can we ever truly set aside our own perspective and see the world from someone else's viewpoint? Mo`olelo Performing Arts Company is a professional theater company dedicated to broadening the scope of San Diego's cultural environment. Their mission is to create new works based on research within various communities, produce lesser-known works by master and contemporary playwrights and educate youth. "Mo`olelo" is the Hawaiian word for "story," and reflects their vision to tell powerful stories, as diverse as the Islands of Hawaii, that inspire participation, generate dialogue, and build bridges across societal divides.
