Time: 9:00 am - 11:00 am

Location: Alliance Healthcare Foundation
9325 Sky Park Court, Suite 350, San Diego, CA 92123

Overview: Guest speaker:

  • Susie Smith, Director, Californians For Economic Security (CFES), Insight Center for Community Economic Development

The Insight Center for Community Economic Development’s Californians For Economic Security (CFES) is a statewide, research-driven initiative to raise awareness and shape policy to ensure that all Californians can live with dignity and economic well-being. CFES focuses on two vulnerable populations: families with children (the Family Economic Security Initiative) and seniors (the Elder Economic Security Initiative.)

Please join Alliance Healthcare Foundation and San Diego Grantmakers for an overview of what families and seniors need to earn to survive in San Diego County. We will cover information on:

  • The Family Standard measures how much it costs for working families younger than 65 to live in each county of California. The Elder Economic Security Standard measures how much it costs older adults (over age 65) in different housing situations, in good or poor health, to meet his or her basic needs.
  • An Insight Center study using this Self-Sufficiency Standard found that 30% of families in California have incomes too low to make ends meet; however, according to the Federal Poverty Line, only 11% of families are considered “poor” in California.
  • Learn how you, as a funder, can use these standards to evaluate your own grantmaking as well as the progress of your grantees in moving families and seniors to economic security.
